Healthy Popcorn Recipe from Glenn McElhose on Vimeo.
Hello – and welcome to dirtsalad! What is this site? Well, to me it’s basically about random dirt/happenings/etc that take place in one’s close proximity and then they are tossed together in some sort of salad – a video salad that is. I’m going to post 1 video per week. Initially, it’ll be shot and edited by myself, Glenn. However, my long term goals are to get others to help out in any way possible. It’s all about getting people together and creating content that promotes a sort of awareness, consciousness, and environmental type style in a fun and engaging way. I’ll actually try to explain this better with a video – I’ll do that for next week, or soon anyway. Also coming soon is an update to this site. I know it’s bare-bones and rather template oriented now, but at some point soon I’ll get time to make it a bit more original.
Ok, so here’s this weeks video. It’s about making popcorn. Why? Well, my girlfriend Kristin is a therapeutic chef and typically cooks or prepares meal plans for people that are trying to prevent cancer, heart disease or diabetes by using foods as medicine. In this video, you will learn how to make popcorn that tastes crazy good and uses ingredients that are actually good for you. Hope you enjoy and please feel free to write in with any questions/comments to comments at dirtsalad.com
Hmm, that email address seems to not be working right now. Let’s go with comments@keyholeproductions.com for now. Sorry.
Thanks for stopping by!
Glenn

love the cat bit at the end. great episode i look forward to next weeks episode
Hey Glenn! I am really liking the site so far! I’ll be checking on it for updates a couple times a week. I like the healthy eating tips. Keep it up man.
Awesome video. I can’t wait for more of the same to come out… I love this style of food preparation (i.e. with purpose).
You should do a video on sprouting beans. I keep sprouting lentils and mung beans but I just eat them raw.
i’m not much into eating seaweed but, very fun video… you do a good job with diggnation, wouldn’t expect any less here
cheers
hey glenn, nice work. This is pretty interesting stuff. Really liking the use of multiple cameras and the semi interview nature of the show. Also sorta reminds of a more educational Ctrl-Alt-Chicken. Anyway, looking forward to more videos in the future.
Great video. Healthy snack food is always good times. Looking forward to seeing more.
Coming here from the after watching the newest Diggnation, it’s a nice site
Personally I’m not into the whole vegetarian stuff(love meat) but i found the video to be very entertaining and the popcorn looked great, now if i only had all those ingredients!
All well and good Glenn, but i wouldnt go through all that for pop corn
But non the less, just found your site from diggnation new ep =) subscribed to rss
Keep the videos rolling man.
awesome
thanks for the video bro
Dang, i had no idea flax oil was so important.
wow that was awesome, I never really thought about how popcorn could be anything besides salt and butter. what an eye opener. You and Kristin did a really nice job together; I’m looking forward to more! (and cute cats)
Interesting site! bookmarked!
sweet stuff
Great work on Diggnation! Watched the popcorn video and I’m itching for more. Keep it up dude!
Great Job Guys! more food videos would be great. damn i want some popcorn now.
Why does healthy eating have to be so much more work.
Is that Lettuce I hear in the background? They rock!
Looking forward to seeing what you’ve got to say since summer is coming upon us.
Awesome domain name and great vid. Also digging the website layout.
Hey I really enjoyed the video Glenn. I’ll be following your posts through Google Reader, keep up the good work.
really good job! my dad is suffering with cancer so i’ll definitely tell him about this site! and also, you spelled dirtsalad.com wrong at the end of the second paragraph
Cool site and great video. My girlfriend and I are going to try and make some of that popcorn tonight.
By the way, what was the song playing at the end of the popcorn video?
Cool video, i always find this kind of stuff entertaining (and disappointing, since i never have the ingredients to replicate it”.
If you do more food vids like this, it would be neat to see a comparison between the healthy(ier) alternative like you showed and the average version (e.g. compare microwave popcorn and ingredients to the version you made).
Great domain name too!
Nice work Glenn. This is a great help to my ever improving diet. Thought I’d sum it up if anyone wants to replicate your popcorn. Wasn’t sure about the seaweed though.
Shownotes:
Start with a bowl of airpopped, organic, non-GMO popcorn. Drizzle with flaxseed oil. Spritz with Bragg Liquid Aminos. Pour on the hot sauce, and sprinkle with nutritional yeast, garlic granuals, and delfs? seaweed.

Glenn, Good Stuff man.. Hope all is well @Rev3. Continue with the healthy recipes- I enjoyed it.
hahaha i like it. i will definitely check back often.
Always enjoy you on Diggnation, so it’s no surprise that I like this, too. I’ve been a vegetarian for about seven years now, and I really appreciate interesting suggestions like these. Kristin is great, too! She seems a perfect match for you. Don’t let her get away.
Hey Hippie! That was very cool & interesting video. I’ve been wanting to incorporate more organic & vegan in my diet. Wish there was someone like Kristin where I lived. I’ll have to try to find an air popper & try this recipe.
One question if I may; do your cats eat vegan as well?
awesome hippie, ive always wondered how to make normal food like popocorn healthy and to initially start eating healthy so these videos rock
enjoy you on diggnation, will continue to visit dirtsalad.
Diggin the video and site, gotta say i’m really tempted with the whole vegetarian way. My friend already crossed-over i’m teeter tottering on account of not knowing a whole lot about healthy eating. Will be lookin forward to your future posts. Cheers.
Excellent video, well done. Kristin really knows her stuff – great idea putting her in front of the camera
great editing i will defiantly try some of that popcorn
Hey Glenn, some great tips here! I hope to see some more in the future or be able to contribute to the salad bowl.

Hey Hippie Glen,
How much longer till the next one? it’s been two weeks already
Btw- It was great
Love all the different camera angles you have set up! And you have cute cats by the way! =]
great video and the popcorn looks great.
That is pretty much how we eat our popcorn too. Nutritional yeast, Bragg’s, garlic, and oil (either flax or hemp), makes EVERYTHING taste better! Thanks for the video. Keep it coming!
Great site! Love it though if you could add along with each new video a list of ingredients for those of us who are actually going to make those recipes it is easier for us to go out and grab em!
Keep up the good work!
Great Video Glenn. I’ve just gone out and bought everything I need (already had the popcorn popper) gonna give it a go, I love the smell of the seaweed. Look forward to more videos.
Hey Glenn… digging the style. I am going to try this for sure.
“I’m going to post 1 video per week.” Hey Glenn! What happened to that? We need your health tips!
HOT SAUCE!!!
So my girlfriend doesn’t like popcorn (something about blood type-B I think) but are there any other equally tasty vehicles for these seasonings you might suggest? She wasn’t exactly raised in a health food house so that creates a little reluctance. Any ideas?
You can also try using a soy based product called Earth Balance as a butter replacement for a more typical tasting but still healthy popcorn. Personally I have been doing the tamari & nutritional yeast combination since I was little, but I think the taste is a bit out there for some people. My girlfriend loves earth balance as a butter replacement though. There’s less fat than butter and soy is actually good for women.
I think it should be noted that nutritional yeast, like other yeasts, is a fungi not bacteria. The B12 aspect of the yeast, however, is added from bacteria and doesn’t come from the yeast itself.
Aside from that, don’t justify food. People are more turned off by ‘scientific’ justification than if you simply present the food as it is. Healthy food is nutritious and tasty on its own, et cetera, et cetera… see Michael Pollan, Mark Bittman et alii.
No doubt – food and nutrition is not to be taken as a religion, and when I say I’m mostly vegetarian, people can get a bit weird about things. I’m not trying to push any of my ideas/ideals/beliefs on anyone. I just know that when I eat what feels good and right to me, I feel more energetic and overall – good. Also, while you’re mentioning what I should and shouldn’t do, consider how you word things yourself – telling me to ‘don’t’ do things makes you sound hypocritical yourself. Maybe next time consider writing something like, ‘think about your approach, you sound a bit preachy’ or something like that. We’re all in this together, so let’s keep it as positive as we can.
Oh – and thanks for mentioning Michael Pollan – he’s on top of it and I really need to read more of his stuff. As for Mark Bittman, haven’t heard of him but shall check him out! Send more links/info as ye see fit.
Thanks for the comment tho! Really appreciate it. Conversation/communication – good shtuff!
I’m really curious!! Is there another website that would have more of these little healthy recipe videos!? I loved it and I loved all the explanations of the ingredients! I tried therapeutic chef, but i kind of like the video aspect more than just a written recipe. more please:] ps. the site looks great good job!!
Jane
RSS’d it. Laughed. Liked meeting Kristen. Doubt I will remember all the ingredients next time I’m at the coop, but will at least try to remember nutritional yeast and spray stuff. See? I already forgot what it’s called! Dr. G…?? Something? Seaweed? Man, I just might have to revert to my stir-crazy popcorn maker… As an aside on the flax oil. I used about a 1/3 ratio of flax seed meal to flour in a recent batch of ciabatta bread and have learned a little goes a loooong way. Very objectionable flavor. Barfy. Then tried 3T. Bliss. Should have read up on it before I experimented.
Get posting my friend, you are way behind. I love the look and feel of the site.
da best. Keep it going! Thank you
I haven’t seen Liquid Aminos for the longest time! Mom used to put that in our “stir fry” as well as nori flakes. Also, when I was a kid we used to use a dutch oven to make our popcorn. Are those air poppers still around?
Looks tasty whether you’re vegan/veggie or carnivore.
