Cut Interview from Glenn McElhose on Vimeo.
a couple of long long weeks ago i was in a place that i care not to care to discuss for more than a 7 or 8 minute period of time. it was a time that was as confusing as this and here is what went down when and how.
i was seated in a small upright position similar to that of a person in court awaiting the results of a hearing that will determine whether or not they scrub gum off of sidewalks in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay region – not that I’d have any know how of what that looks like, as I’ve never even seen a district court judge other than the one time a friend of mine made a model of that sort of scene with lego blocks.
so let’s get to it. here’s the scene slash typical scenario. I was editing a short montage type video clip for the popular social news networking site digg dot com. one typically gets about an hour or so of footages – ok, wait, quick side story. i have a friend from Nepal working on a documentary about his life growing up half in Nepal and half in Los Gatos, California – an interesting story but not the point of this. what the point is is that he doesn’t say footage, as in video footage. he says “footages”. I prefer “footages”. Thus, from this point forward, I will use the word footages instead of footage unless i forget and don’t. So – with the footages i was given, i needed to cut one point 5 hours down to about 3 minutes. I had her down to 4 minutes and to get it to 3, i had to cut what i thought was a key, crucial interview. it was devestating. but i understood why. had i kept it in there, the interview would’ve been 1/4 of all of the content in the whole piece. i wanted it. they didn’t – but again, i understood why. it would’ve been 1/4 of all of the content in the entire piece. anyway, here we are, the point of all of this mumbo jumbo (wonder what the origination of that word(s) is, don’t worry, i’m not going to look it up right now). the point is that the interview ended up being cut entirely because to just use a short portion of it would not have done it any justice, nor would one follow it or get the whole idea. so here, below, is the interview in it’s entirety. way to go Trammell, you really nailed it.

I didnt understand a single thing about this entire blog post or the video. I think Glenn must be on the doobies again.
Uhh…yea some elaboration is needed…
Glenn, what state of inebriation where you in when you typed up this post? Somehow I think I understood you for the most part, though, not sure what that says about me.
Anonymous and Joe – thank you for your comments. While I understand what you say, I will regurgitate and say this. I was not in any altered state when I wrote this. I was actually at the Digitas conference in NYC running camera. I had been standing for a long period of time. I then sat down during a short break and had some coffee. I had uploaded the video the night before and wanted to write something about it and during my break, that is what I wrote while people were mumbling about around me. Unfortunately, this post most resembles the kind of mindless ramble that typically goes on in my brain-henge. In the future, I will see about trying to make more sense, although at this time and space, I cannot guarantee anything.
Thanks again for your comments, keep up the good work. And – thanks for visiting dirtsalad – I will work to provide more informative/interesting segments in the future.
Rambling Glenn,
Glenn
Genious Hippie, genious. I realize im spelling genious wrong, but I like it better this way; ………..genious.
I hear ya on the video condensing. can be really nerve wrecking and I often over complicate it. I esp hate when the client wants something stupid and u gotta give it to em’
oh well. keep up the ballerina suits and robo-keg shots!

It all makes perfect sense to me, excellent interview btw, love the blog so far it’d be good to see that Final Cut tutorial sometime but no pressure dude I just want to see your slant on it.
Keep up the good work.
Steve.
