the following video clip is Random Episode 5 (or 6), Part 2 of 2, portion A. The whole thing is 45 minutes and
based upon recent comments, it deemed appropriate to cut it into 2 twenty some minute segments. There was an easy place between topics to do such cutting. Thus, this first episode covers one main topic that we can call – “scammers and being scammed while out traveling”. Part 2 will be about “personal favorite places to travel to” and why.

China Part 2a from Glenn McElhose on Vimeo.

I had the exact same thing with the ‘art students’ while visiting the Forbidden Palace in June! I had no idea it was a scam until now.
That was fantastic – thanks for that!
Fantastic, entertainment wise – not that fact that you both got scammed.
thanks for another great episode of random glenn!!
Nice video Glenn!, and good tips they give
Only took a month to post, but good video anyway!
Great vid! Once again, fun and interesting.
It obviously sucks that you guys got scammed but it’s great to have the experience to pass on to other travelers. When I first got to China I heard the ‘tea house’ stories and thought it was a one in a million type of thing. At least you guys had the money to take care of the bill. I’ve heard stories of people getting roughed up by the care-taker of the tea house who was also in on the scam when they disputed the amount of the bill.
Also kudos for Tim showing telling you what was up and also for you guys playing along with the ‘are students’ afterward. Getting your money back is a smart thing to do.
If you need more lasers, let us know. We’ll be holding down the fort in Beijing for a year at least.
Hey Glen,
Entertaining vid as always. I want to ask you for some advice if you have the time. Next March I am planning a 2 week trip to Asia with my friends and producing a demo for a travel/adventure show. The finished product will be about 1 hour long. The show will be driven by 2 hosts interacting with various locals and environments. 1 main camera and 1 secondary camera. 4 person crew total.
I’m familiar with still photography but I’ve never attempted anything like this before. We plan on renting all of our gear since we only have a small (non existent) budget. The demo will likely be strictly for online viewing, perhaps convert it later if we have success pitching the show. We’re trying to keep the gear as simple as possible, focussing mainly on content.
Would you be able to give me some suggestions based on your experience?
Cameras:
What type of cameras should we rent? Do we need high end gear like Canon XH A1′s? Or should we just film with cheapo Best Buy specials?
Sound:
I’m thinking we need wireless mics on each of our hosts, plus 2 more for guests and in case 1 or 2 break down.
Do we need bayonet style mics on each camera to capture ambient sound?
Storage:
Hard disk drive or tapes? How would you manage all the media assets on the road? Ship back all the tape?
Is sound storage different than video storage?
Lighting:
For most situations just work with ambient and carry a foldable reflector.
Detachable lights for each camera if they don’t come with one on board.
Editing/post:
I might hire someone to piece the show together and create the title overlays. I might edit it myself using FCP.
Your feedback would be sincerely appreciated. (I couldn’t find your email address)
Cheers!
Rollan
Awesome stuff! When’s the next part coming?
not sure. when do you want it? tis the last episode we have (indefinitely) – so maybe we should wait a little while, no?
Yeah, absolutely..
)
Fun stuff by the way.. I have similar experiences myself there, including rip offs by fortune tellers in china and pickpocketing hookers in Vietnam.. Kind of annoying when you’re there, but fun story to tell afterwards.. (whereas I don’t tell anyone the fortune teller story as I was a real dumbfuck there
cheers from germany
Again, very informational and interesting video. Too bad you and Kevin got scammed.
I wouldn’t mind more episodes of Random.
hey glen! what kind of camara did you used in the trip??
hey, when do you plan on releasing the next half of the video? I think the wait has been sufficient
When is part 2b coming? :]
sometime in the near to late future. probably next week that is.
i am in agreement. let’s go with next week. thanks kyle, i need a little push sometimes.
The student art show seems to be pretty popular. I encountered it in Yu Yuan Garden in Shanghai. I blew the person off, as I was focused on seeing the gardens and bargaining at the bazaar.
Great videos. I need to get up to Beijing.
