Nice to have another ep. Glenn, do you change your computer res when taking screen shots for video?
And why no DSLR footage interspersed?
So heated about that hotdog…
Hey Glenn – Really dig these Random shows. Where can I find episode 9?
i love these random eps. glen, you always do a great job w/directing, editing, sound, etc. kevin has become a great host/personality since his techtv days, but im also very impressed w/tim; he is a very smart &charismatic personality as well. i love these topics. i really dig (no pun intended) the way they discuss them, very at-ease &much like joining friends for a great conversation. yeah, im gushing. but i def would like more in the future. cheers to you three!
Isn’t this like a guest book that you guys said on diggnation keep up the good work
Stephen
Another great episode, always entertaining and I learn something new every time.
Definitely going to check out the “Delivering Happiness” book as well.
you should be able to find it on kevin’s blog – kevinrose.com – but I’m going to repost here with a few outtakes as well shortly. thx for reminder!
First off, thanks for posting the video Glenn. And second, it’s already been asked, but is Episode 9 available anywhere?
Like somebody said, another great episode. Congrats Glenn for the great work;)
this was shot with your 5D, wasnt it?
How did you record the sound? what equipment did you use?
greetings from germany
Dennis
just posted this to Tim’s blog comments:
Audio/Video Questions – here’s what was used/how:
I’ve been shooting on the Canon Mark II 5D lately. The tricky part with a show that is potentially longer than 13 minutes is that the 5D will only capture 13 minutes at a time. Thus – 2 5D’s! Kevin brought out his as well so I was able to swap camera angles when it got close to 13 minutes so there was no interruption – I just had to point to what camera T & K should be talking to (hence at one point when Tim asked where he should be looking).
As for audio, I’m currently recording into my Canon XHA1. A rather expensive audio recorder (sorry XHA1, I know you’re worth more than that) but is what works best for me right now. This way I can monitor the audio that’s being recorded – can’t do that with the 5D.
Think that’s it, hope this helps!
Glenn
yes – should be able to find Ep 9 on Kevins blog – kevinrose.com
I’ll post it here as well shortly.
Hi Glenn,
First off just wanted to say that I m a big fan of Random, really enjoy watching it, interesting people talking about interesting things, great stuff!
I noticed in your latest episodes that you have been shooting on a DSLR. I was wondering how you found shooting with it compared to your standard compact Z1 or equivalent video camera (in terms of practicalities / draw backs / ease of use / benefits?)
Currently I m in the process of either buying a Z5 or maybe going with a canon 7d, and using it predominantly for video work, but am undecided. I ll be using it for mainly interviews / documentary. I ll be recording audio onto a different source so thats not an issue if i was to go down the dslr route.
Any thoughts / advice of any kind would be much appreciated. Many thanks,
I’m not 100% sure, but I think this is meant to be episode 9.
Hey, im pretty sure this episode was just labelled wrong and is episode 9.
but think random is great and cant wait for more episodes, also interested in what difference the 5d has made to your production process if you find it more efficient etc, and would be kinda interested to see some of your pics :p
Yes! Episode 9, unless one counts the “China pre-trip” as an episode – which I did, thus the number 10. 5D is awesome – definitely not more efficient, actually way less efficient due to audio and time limit restrictions. However, if you have time/equipment to bypass those issues, end result is way cleaner! Many pics with 5D on flickr.com/dirtsalad

It took me a little effort, but I was able to dig up (at Tim Ferris’ urging in this episode) Marc Andreessen’s blog post about hiring, managing, promoting, and firing within a startup: http://3.ly/v5Aa
I’m a hardware engineer and I’ve worked at startups, growing, medium sized, & huge companies and I believe so much of this is applicable to any company and you can substitute the word “engineer” or “manager” for “executive” in most places and it still holds true. A Great read for anyone passionate about making their business or company great.
Thanks Andy!
wonder what you went with camera wise? I’m still enjoying the depth of field/interchangeable lenses of the Canon DSLR series – hard to beat. However, as you mentioned, drawbacks. Audio: I’ve been recording into a Tascam 8 track portable recorder but only because I usually need many audio inputs. otherwise, i’d go with a beachtek or actually – probably better yet – the juicedlink audio adapters for xlr inputs. think the juicedlink allows for monitoring. either way, i’ve been too scared to rely solely on audio going into the camera that way because you hear that it might be good going into the adapter, but who knows going into the camera that’s recording the audio feed – hence recording audio separately. as for the time issue of only being able to record 13 minutes – i usually try to borrow a 2nd 5d or just start and stop. hope this helps! have fun! i actually love the new challenges!
