SXSW from Glenn McElhose on Vimeo.
This is a video montage of 2,100+ still images and 3 video clips from my travels at SXSW this year.
I tossed the clips on the time line to MGMT’s “kids” track – seemed like a perfect fit, awesome song.
Once certain portions were in sync, I then went back and fudged a bunch of the stills to match the beat and then also use some of the better stills to zoom in on.
That was a fun edit!

Wow, amazing job!
Awesome montage looks amazing, makes you feel like you are there.
Looks like a bunch of wealthy white people
That’s a quick trigger if only 3 were video clips. Awesome video!
This was a fun video to watch. I can’t imagine what it must have taken to shoot that many stills.
Nice work Glenn – looks like you guys had a great time!
That was awesome Glenn!
Love the “stop motion-y” feel to it. Also . . . damn that’s a lot of pics. *lol*
This was fun. How long was this edit? So, were you just taking bursts of pictures all through SXSW?
BADASS.
Hippie, this is siiiick. Well done sir.
that was awesome
Amazing! congratulations for the great job!
Wow. Amazing. Love the song, Kids by MGMT, *applause it great timing
Well done glenn. Looks like a great time was had in texas.
Looks like it was a lot of fUN…..
Hope to catch it next time
Unbelievable job! That was amazing.
That was RAD.
That was so very cool, nice work Glenn. I hope I can finally go to SXSW next year!
K.Rose has a pretty sweet life
That was fucking awesome hippy! Makes me wanna become a photographer.
Mate, that was sensational.
Made me feel like I was there.. Thanks for going to the effort!
Awesome job capturing and editing . That’s really cool like a video scrapbook. I thought I saw Veronica Belmont and I know I saw Sarah Lane. Kevin’s sister is hot.
AMAZING! Was this done in FCP? Any idea of the fps in the final product?
that was really well done
Amazing video Glenn, makes me want to be at SXSW next year for sure, keep up the great work!
You almost had as much fun as I did!
Leo crowd-surfing was the best!
yes, done in FCP. I experimented a few times at how many frames per second each still should last – to match the beat. Once I figured out 5 fps worked pretty well, I changed the import settings to still duration of 5 and then imported all photos. After that, it was a matter of fudging some of them to match more or last longer. G
Whatever you guys are paying Glen .. it’s not enough.
Wow Glenn – you are so freakin great at what you do. What kind of camera do you use for these kinds of photos and videos?
I also love the look of the Random shows — unbelievable HD, perfect color balance, so rich and saturated. It doesn’t look overproduced, but it’s got a visual style that’s distinct. I wish everything on the web looked that beautiful.
I love this video. Can’t believe I missed you at SX. We’ll make up for it next year!
Good job! Entertaining to see behind-the-scenes of your lives.
That was brilliant!! Great job!
Minus all the d-bag hipsters, this was really cool.
ha – hear ya. while I’m one that can usually spot a d-bag factor pretty easily, I’d say that you’re off on this one. pull people out of their element and you see more of the true self – this crew is actually pretty sick. i’m super psyched to be able to work with some of them and then others – I’m pretty psyched that they’re in a position to make a difference in a positive way. i know some people may come across as such, but scrape away a little and you’re like – huh, nice. solid individual.
Amazing, great song (which btw you have me hooked on now) and great video, like someone else said really makes you feel like you were there..or wish you were there.
Awesome editing. I always love your videos. Keep it up, and do some more “Random Shows”!!
Hey Glenn, epic video. I’m glad you remembered the MGMT Kids track that played when you guys all went crowd surfing. It remember hearing it and it was the best way to end the night. I must admit it made me just a tiny bit vaclempt. It was my first SXSW, and my first time also doing it as press. Thanks again for the great video.
What camera did you shoot the still with?
This video is amazing. I hope you do more videos like this, made out of stills.
Canon 5D! 24-70mm 2.8L lens
Fun watch,
I’d be interested to know if you use the RAW files, or just have the camera do the processing into a jpg
Awesome job on the SXSW video. I’d really like to create a similar video myself, although my skill level when it comes to video editing is more in the ballpark of iMovie, rather than Final Cut Pro. My question is whether or not I could pull off creating a video that uses all the tricks found in the SXSW video using iMovie? In advance, thanks for any helpful information. Keep up the good work. Your off the cuff remarks on DiggNation are quite amusing.
That was just aw . good job
at sxsw I was just shooting in jpeg – didn’t have nearly enough cards/memory to shoot that many stills in raw.
I would imagine so – think you can make the duration of stills pretty short in imovie. might take longer though because in fcp, when you import the stills, you can decide on duration – so i didn’t have to change duration of each stills, just some for timing and then some for ones that i wanted to do a push/move on.
Great job, nice edit.
ok hippie i saw this a week after it was posted but just decided to post now lol without you there is no diggnation and your r fu*kin amazing smoke one for me.
